Have I Gone Totally Insane?

Recently I met a man named Don
while I was having my car serviced.
He was well groomed & nicely dressed
so I didn't have a clue that he was homeless
until an hour or so later when I asked if he lived in the area.
He was just there having his car serviced.
He sleeps in his car and usually parks
at a nearby service station named Cole's.
He was in the marines for 10 years & served in Vietnam.
He was an alcoholic,
but he has been sober for 21 years
&
attends a local church.
About a year ago he had an aneurysm
which required surgery
&
several months in the hospital.
I didn't ask how he became homeless,
but I assume that may be the reason.
He receives $700 SSI monthly,
and he asked if he could take me and my daughter
to dinner after he received his check.
He is much older than me,
and he made it clear that
he wasn't asking for a date.
We simply developed a friendship
while we were waiting for our cars.
I declined to let him pay,
but I agreed to meet him for dinner some night.

Before I left on vacation,
I purchased two pieces of cheesecake
&
went to wish him an early happy birthday...
he and my daughter share the same birthday.
I assumed that if I didn't make his day special,
that nobody would & that would be sad
for anyone to experience.
My daughter went with me,
and we found him asleep in his car
with the A/C running
...it was in the upper 90's.
His car was very clean & didn't appear lived in.
He seemed touched that I remembered his birthday,
&
tears formed in his eyes as he was thanking us.
He made a good impression on my daughter,
and like me...
she is usually a good judge of character.
When my childcare problem surfaced,
I realized that we both have something the other needs.
He has lots of time,
and I have extra rooms in my house.
I know how absurd this may sound to some
because of the obvious risks involved.
I would have to get to know him much better
&
find out why he is homeless
before I seriously consider allowing him
to live in my home in exchange for childcare
and help with home/property maintenance.
I would take all necessary precautions such as
doing a background check, checking the sex offenders list, etc.
if I decide to follow through on this idea.
I mentioned it to my daughter, my X and my brother-in-law.
She totally objected (but I didn't have a full discussion with her),
my X started cursing and hung up on me (later called to apologize)
&
my brother-in-law thinks that I've lost my mind.
